At FRESH!, we call it “Better Than Bootcamp” because bootcamp means many things to many different people. (everything from a Curves circuit, to a military style ass-kicking in the wilderness). For us, it’s about helping you reach your fitness and body composition goals in the most effective, safest, and FUN way possible!

We have top notch qualified and experienced coaches teaching each session. Our Better Than Bootcamp sessions are a fitness program that includes top notch fitness instruction, nutritional coaching and motivational training all designed to get you in the best shape of your life in the shortest, safest possible time regardless of your current fitness level.

This fantastic program is taught by the expert Calgary Personal Trainers at FRESH! Fitness. Our Bootcamp classes encompass several styles of training from TRX to Boxing, because of the variety you and your muscles wont settle into the same old routine! This ensures you will see results and you will feel the difference much more quickly than you would doing the same class day in and day out. Typical Bootcamp classes will have you going through the same style of body movement exercises day in and day out. This eventually results in a plateau, and boredome. We provide great variety in your worksouts so you stay interested and your muscles keep responding!

The “Better Than Bootcamp” program runs 6 days per week (Monday – Saturday) at convenient times each day, and since they are held both in-doors and outdoors (mostly indoors, except in really nice weather), the weather is never an issue. We suggest that you attend four or five days a week, but you can still achieve incredible results if you attend at least three days per week.

Most people feel some soreness for the first week. After that point, it is little to moderate. Muscle stiffness is a part of the “getting fit” process that lets you know you are improving! After the first two weeks your body will adjust and you’ll find that you are not as stiff after workouts.However, if you are NEVER stiff after a session, it means you aren’t challenging yourself and will miss out on some great results. What times do you offer FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp”?

Camps take place morning, over lunch and after work. Sessions are between 50 minutes to one hour (depending on the time slot). Sessions will start EXACTLY at the posted time. Stragglers will miss valuable information and calories burned! So, get there on time! Your registration is good for an entire calendar month. What if I’m not very physically fit?

That’s okay! The purpose of FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp” is to get you in shape. We have experience working with a variety of clients, from ultra-marathon runners to people just wanting to get back into shape. All of our workouts can be tailored to any fitness level and accommodate any injury. This way you get the best, most effective, and safest workout for your body.

What if I’m the slowest/clumsiest person?

I’m not a runner, do we have to run in class?

Occasionally, we will do a short running interval, but it is rarely longer than a couple minutes. You aren’t going to be running long distances. That isn’t why you hired us and you will get way better results by doing things like shoulder presses, box jumps, stair climbs, Turkish get-ups, planks, squats, and metabolic conditioning circuits. If you aren’t able to run or jog due to injury, your trainer can always find a suitable alternative exercise for you to do that still produces great results!

What if I’m already in good shape?

That’s great to hear! However, the only way to stay in good shape is to keep challenging your level of fitness and movement skills. The trainers at FRESH! are experts at challenging ANY level of fitness. We structure our workout formats to make modifications easy to do. We can make any exercise more challenging or easier at any time. That means no matter what level you are at, you will keep improving! The best part is because we keep throwing new challenges at you, the workouts never get boring!

What if I have an injury?

Please tell your personal trainer about any injuries or other health concerns BEFORE starting FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp”. We have had experience working with a variety of injuries and are experts at modifying any exercise. However, the nature of your individual injury situation will determine the best way for us to work together. The primary goal of FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp” is for our clients to get effective workouts without causing or aggravating injuries. Absolutely! The 3-5 sessions per week that you are with us are very important, but the MOST important part is the time you aren’t with us. That’s why we provide “at-home” and “off-day” workouts, nutritional guidelines, motivation, organizational and time management strategies, and MUCH more to help you be successful in your journey to results!

What is the cost (investment in myself)

At FRESH!, we have a variety of pricing options to suit virtually any budget.  The rate depends mostly on how often you come.  We are happy to meet with you to discuss the details.  The ideal program is different for everyone, but here are a things to consider

  • FRESH! is hands-down the best value in the city.  Our rates are comparable to other bootcamps, but we provide a MUCH higher standard of service, instruction, programming, and supplementary resources.
  • We are NOT a gym, we are a PRIVATE Training Facility hired by people like YOU to get them the results they’ve been struggling to get on their own.
  • We are NOT a typical Bootcamp.  Our Group Personal Training is a completely different experience than your average Bootcamp.
    • You will receive a highly individualized level of professional instruction
    • Our trainers are post-secondary educated, experienced, and must pass strict standards for competency and service through our detailed Internship program prior to working with clients.

Do I get a discount for signing up again?

Yes and No.  You see, at FRESH!, we believe that optimal health and fitness is a lifelong journey and that 1 or 2 months will only help you START that journey.  We don’t hold people to contracts.  You can come month to month if you want, but our memberships are meant to be continuous. Because we don’t stop and start the programs, there are no discounts for stopping and then starting again.

Common Questions AFTER Registering?

Where do we meet?

Most of FRESH! Bootcamps are held at our downtown studio location at 734 7th Ave SW,     T2P 3P8 on the 18th floor of the Life Plaza building. In the summer some our classes meet at Princess Island Park. The location of all classes is posted in your Online Scheduling Account.  You will see this when you register for a class in the system.

What if the weather is bad?

During winter, all classes are held in doors. During spring, summer, and part of fall, some classes are held at various outdoor locations. If it’s raining, snowing, or otherwise yucky weather, check the location at least one hour before class starts. We will make sure to let you know of any location change ahead of time.

There’s no need to worry if you don’t like exercising outside, we always have some indoor classes all year round.

What if I can’t make it one day?

We strongly encourage our clients to come in at least 3 times a week to get the results they want. FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp” is offered at 15 different time slots during the week. If you can’t make one class, there are 14 different opportunities for you to make it in.

What about holidays?

FRESH! Fitness is closed all statutory holidays. We will always let our clients know ahead of time when we will be closed.

Is there a place to leave my bags while we work out?

You betcha! FRESH! Fitness has separate change rooms for both men and women. The spacious and clean facilities have washrooms, a private work out area, showers, and day lockers. If you wish to use the lockers, please bring your own locks. Also, please remember to collect your belongings after your workout.

If you are used to typical “outdoor” bootcamps where you have to carry your weights and bring your own equipment to some random park, having top quality change rooms, showers, and amenities will be a great bonus!

What should I wear to class?

Comfortable clothing you can move and sweat in. It doesn’t have to be name-brand athletic wear, but keep in mind you will be sweating, so wearing your best Armani suit is not recommended. Most clients wear shorts or workout pants, and a t-shirt. We strongly recommend that our female clients wear a comfortable sports bra during the workouts and that our male clients wear shorts or pants with proper support.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

Comfortable, supportive, non-marking, clean athletic shoes are best.  Ideally cross trainers or court shoes because they have better lateral support.  Running shoes are OK, but with any lateral movement they have poor stability and make it easier to roll an ankle.

You should be in a newer pair of athletic shoes that are made specifically for your feet and the way you walk/run. It all starts from the ground up, so being in the appropriate pair of shoes will help protect your knees, shins, and back from injury. Go to a knowledgeable shoe store where they observe your stride and foot type before fitting you in a pair of shoes.

We will be doing things like strength training, running (not far), jumping, agility intervals, climbing stairs, boxing and much more!  You want shoes in which you are comfortable doing these movements.  If your workout shoes have been in the family for generations (or more than a year old) then it might be time to consider retiring them. You don’t need to buy state of the art sneakers with GPS and heart rate monitors, but something that won’t fall apart after 1 flight of stairs is recommended.

Also, because most classes are indoors, please don’t bring shoes covered in mud from your last hiking adventure!

I’m sore is this normal?

Your muscles don’t care whether you’ve run marathons, climbed mountains, or haven’t worked out in 6 months, FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp” workouts are a shock to the system. The first week you will be sore, no way around it!

After week one, you will begin to feel stronger as your body acclimates to the workouts. Soreness will come much less frequently after week one, but don’t be fooled; if you continue to give your 100% every day the results will come!

How much water should I be drinking?

You’d be surprised how easy it is to dehydrate. Sweating during sleep (especially during the humid months), drinking caffeinated liquids such as coffee, alcohol, etc., and exercising are just some of the ways in which you lower the body’s level of hydration. Make sure you’re drinking at LEAST a ½ oz. of water PER POUND of body weight throughout the day.  Then drink additional water during exercise.

Aim to drink 1cup (8 oz) 15 minutes before class, approx. 1 liter (32oz) of water during class, and 1cup (8 oz) 15 minutes after class. Sports drinks with electrolytes are generally not needed as they are loaded with chemicals and sugar (ask our trainers how you can make your own healthy, natural energy drink).

If you’re unsure about your level of hydration, check your urine – the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.  A good rule of thumb is “keep drinking until you pee clear!”

OK, here’s a little more detail on that!  It all depends on your goals (and your metabolic type) but across the board, all FRESH! “Better Than Bootcamp” participants need to fuel their bodies with energy to have successful workouts. To find out your metabolic type, download our simple questionnaire.  If you need more clarification on how to Eat Right for Your Metabolic Type, book a short session with one of our trainers!

If you’re working out early in the morning it’s critical to eat breakfast.  Even something small will help.  If you are still getting used to breakfast and have trouble taking in enough food in the morning, bring a snack with you for during and after camp (speak with our trainers about the best food options for YOUR metabolic type).

Foods such as whole grains are good sources of energy-rich carbohydrates, eat top quality lean meats, plenty of raw or slightly cooked vegetables and whole fruits.  The more whole unprocessed foods you can eat, the better off you will be!

If you’re working out in the evening, have a sensible snack about two hours beforehand. Some home made trail mix and/or fruit are quite suitable.

After your workouts, make sure you eat well enough to replenish your depleted stores. Muscles need extra help to recover from the damage done by intense activity. Protein aids in the recovery of worked muscles, so try to eat some protein each meal. Getting enough protein (egg whites, chicken, tuna, etc.) does NOT mean skipping on your carbs!! Not having enough fuel in your tank can lead to light-headedness or dizziness during class.

Make sure to have healthy snacks with you at all times and time your meals properly (this will be discussed further in your Bootcamp 101 Success Handbook.  With the intensity of your Bootcamp 101 sessions, you’ll be hungry when you wake up, at 10am, at lunch, at 3pm, at dinner, after dinner…well, you get the picture.  Your goal will be to eat enough healthy, whole foods as needed for performance, but avoid overindulging!  Just because you burned 1000 calories during camp, doesn’t mean you are justified in eating 1500 calories for dinner!

Akk..I’ve gained weight what’s going on?

Don’t freak out yet! As we get stronger and tone the body, we gain lean muscle. The more muscle we have, the faster our metabolism becomes. The faster our metabolism, the better our bodies are at burning calories not only during workouts, but throughout your day’s normal acitivites. An average bootcamper will not see a difference on the scale until weeks 4 or afterwards, so throw the scale in the back of your closet for now!

Also, nutrition plays a HUGE part in weight gain and loss. Make sure the calories you’re eating have the purpose of fueling your workouts.  Candy bars and 4 glasses of wine don’t count! It’s a simple equation: the calories you eat need to be less than the calories you exercise away to lose weight.  One pound of fat is 3500 calories.  To lose one pound per week, you will have to consume 500 LESS than you burn off that day.  Now you can see why regular exercise is so important!

I’m getting pain in my joints, what’s going on?

A large majority of pains can be avoided with the appropriate pair of athletic shoes. For some, these pains are caused by tight muscles, so be sure to get to class on time and go through the full warm-up!  You may need to spend a little time after class stretching particularly tight areas.  An additional 10 minutes of stretching during your day (at work, home, in line at the bank, etc.) could relieve the tightness; just be sure that you are stretching correctly.  If this is something you are concerned about, try booking a special Flexibility session with one of our trainers.  They will show you loads of ways to improve your mobility and reduce the chance of injury.

For some people, the pain can be caused by prior injuries, weak muscles surrounding joints/tendons or even genetic abnormalities. For these participants, DON’T BE STUBBORN! Be sure to consult with your physician before exacerbating the problem and ask our trainers for help!  We’ve helped hundreds of people recover from serious injuries in the past.

What other events are offered or included?

FRESH! regularly does other events and all clients are invited! In the past we’ve done Spartan races, grocery tours, and went to Body Worlds at the Telus World of Science. We will let our clients know a few weeks in advance about upcoming events. So stay tuned!

On occasion, there will be other special events hosted by FRESH! Fitness. These may be educational or community related events which will allow you to learn about health and fitness, contribute to the community, and socialize with other members outside of your daily workout sessions.  They are LOTS of FUN and we encourage you to attend as many as possible.
