Summer is just around the corner and this means race season is ramping up. At FRESH!, this fits right into each of our 4 Pillars of Wellness (Fitness, Nutrition, Lifestyle, Mindset). Training for an event is loads of fun, it helps you stay motivated, challenges you to step outside your comfort zone (hopefully) and it gets you outdoors to enjoy the awesome summer weather.
The unfortunate part is that while so many people have aspirations of doing a race, most are completely unprepared for the challenge (physically and mentally). We’ve seen hundreds of clients over the years who are riddled with injuries, aches, pains, and frustrating performances due to their lack of physical preparation or coaching.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you NEED a coach to do a race. YOU DON’T! While it’s nice, and will certainly improve your chances of a successful result, it’s more important to get started properly. Runners, cyclists, and triathletes are probably the worst for this. They typical training plan involves buying some new gear (shoes, bike, etc.) and then starting a training program.
This will work to improve your fitness level, but the problem is deeper than that. Most people never figure out where they are starting from a movement QUALITY standpoint. If you are a runner, and have faulty movement patterns, stability levels, or compensations that affect your stride, what do you think it will do to your performance, and ability to improve? What about your chances of injury?
It’s like building a house on a foundation of quicksand! If you move POORLY, moving MORE will not fix the problem! In fact, it just makes it worse. That’s why we see so many people who are active, but suffering from completely preventable movement issues. Most of these issues would have been a simple fix had they been dealt with at the beginning, but once months of training volume is piled on top of that faulty pattern, the issues become ingrained, and pain/frustration begins to mount (along with your physiotherapy bills)!
My challenge to you is this…
If you are already active, get a proper functional movement analysis to ensure that you are building your fitness base on top of solid movement skills, and that you aren’t creating further damage to your body and training aspirations!
If you aren’t active yet, but thinking about it…be SMART and get your functional movement analysis FIRST! That way you can get started properly and avoid the pain, injury, and frustration that most people go through. Your body will thank you for it!
You may be asking…”What is a functional movement analysis”. Well, I can’t speak for what other coaches offer (generally not much more than standardized fitness testing), but at FRESH!, we take a different approach. Our first session is always a functional movement analysis (regardless of someone’s fitness level or background). We are routinely told that this session is the most valuable time and money they’ve spent on their health and fitness, even from people who’ve worked with personal trainers and coaches for years!
The functional movement analysis is simple. We observe, evaluate, and coach you though the 7 Primal Patterns of Movement. These are:
- Gait (Single Leg Transition)
We do this with just your own body weight. No additional load or challenges. Our goal is to look for variations form ideal movement quality that are red flags for inefficiency, decreased performance, or injury. Once we identify your unique “movement fingerprint”, we can coach you on corrective exercise, mobility, and stability activities that will improve your movement patterns.
If this is the only session you ever did with us, you would be further ahead that 99% of people out there. That’s because you would know what proper movement look like, feels like, how to identify errors, and how to correct them. This will dramatically reduce your risk of injury, while improving your performance…and how much you enjoy your event!
From now until October, you can literally do a different race every weekend! So, whether you have decided to do a run, obstacle race such as Spartan, Tough Mudder, or some other adventurous event, you should make sure your body is ready for the challenge! Sign up for some challenging events this summer, but promise yourself to “Do it right!”
