At 57 years old, I’m an avid runner, but had no experience with strength training or other styles of conditioning. I decided to take on a Spartan Race last year, and while I did pretty well due to my running, it was an eye opener in how much I struggled with many of the obstacles (the rope climb, burpees, and wall climbs).
So I sought out a fitness club that offered group classes since I enjoy the company and structure of classes. After joining Fresh and their dedication to helping me improve my weak areas. I was ready for this year’s Calgary spartan. I did not run as much as the previous year, but made up for it with all the strength and cardio from 2 group classes per week at FRESH!.
I had trouble doing a pistol squat on my left side but after 4 months of classes I was able to now do 3 or more on both sides. MY core and diagonal strength increases from all the variety of workouts in classes made me feel ready for race day… On race day, I started off more aggressively in the running and it was a longer course this year and tougher with a few more hills. My race weight was about the same as last year, but more muscle and less fat made everything feel easier while going over, under, through obstacles.
The rope climb was a relative breeze compared to last year. The results proved FRESH! classes were what I needed to improve my results. I won the 50 plus age category, and I placed 15th in the elite heat and tied for 20th in the open overall from the 5000 registered Saturday racers. Mostly 20 and 30 year olds ahead of me, a testament to the FRESH! training program!
Thanks to the FRESH! coaches for all the extra encouragement. I look forward to continuing my fitness program with you this next year.
