Stop and think about the REAL answer to this question…

Stop and think about the REAL answer to this question… What are my actions moving me closer to?

We all have things we want to accomplish in life, but most people are on autopilot for the majority of their lives, and therefore, continually struggle to get the results they want.

Let’s face it, habits and routines are an essential part of life, but they can sneakily hold us back unless we consciously and strategically “turn off the autopilot” at certain times.

Awareness is arguably the most important aspect of change. Being aware allows you to focus and get clear on the things that matter most to you.

Awareness is a skill that improves with practice. Like a muscle, start using it more, and it will get stronger.

The great news is that once you are aware of (or “see”) something in your life, particularly those with the greatest impact, it’s very difficult to “unsee” it.

Your awareness becomes a beacon or constant reminder of an opportunity in front of you.

Some of the things that are important to become aware of:

  • Your current situation, particularly the areas you want to change
  • What you want…from life, and key areas within that life (goals, outcomes, etc.)
  • Your mindset around life, goals, challenges, and the change process
  • The actions you are taking each day

Until you become aware of these areas, purposeful change will not happen.

Once you’ve reached this point, the change journey can proceed.

While meaningful change in mindset, beliefs, and habits is rarely easy, there’s a simple question you can ask yourself that will make the process much quicker and easier.

The great thing is this question is simple to answer, only requires a yes or no, and you can ask yourself the question every time you face a decision throughout your day.

It also works for any type of decision: health, fitness, nutrition, work, relationships, and more!

Stop and think about the REAL answer to this question…

What are my actions moving me closer to?

Or, said in a more granular way…

Will this action move me closer to my goals, or further away?

The simplicity of this question hides its true power.

When you are aware of the gap between your current situation and where you want to be, asking (and truthfully answering) this question becomes like the turn-by-turn directions on your GPS.

Now, it’s important to note, not EVERY action must be taking you closer to your goals, but the majority of them should be.

When clients are struggling to get results in a particular area, this is a simple exercise that I walk them through. It’s interesting to note how different the answers are when someone else (particularly their coach) is asking the questions.

Humans have a phenomenal capacity to rationalize and make things more complicated than necessary.

A simple YES or NO answer to this question (Will this action take me closer to my goal?).

If the answer is NO too often, you have the solution at your fingertips!

Turn the answer into a YES more often.

You likely already know what to do to make it a YES, but sometimes outside help speeds up the process.
