Common Weight Loss Mistakes

Today, we will continue with our Fitness Myths topic and discuss one more common myth that centers on weight loss and the common mistakes that people make while trying to lose weight. Let’s dive in…

Myth: Exercise will help me lose weight quickly

Exercise-related weight loss myths are closely related to the previous resistance training and weight loss myths but from the other side of the equation. People often think that if they start exercising, the weight will just “fall off”. Exercising is GREAT, but it’s only one part of the equation.

A common weight loss mistakes

A common weight loss mistake is for people to start “counting calories” for their exercise and nutrition. This is a recipe for disaster, frustration, and disillusionment.

For example, an average person (if that even exists) will burn about 100 calories walking for a mile (1.6km), but that same person would likely burn about 60 calories if they just sat still and did nothing.

An intense 1-hour workout session might burn 500-700 calories, but it’s pretty easy to consume 3-4 times that in a fast food meal or dessert.

Trying to match the “calories in/calories out” to your exercise is an exercise in futility. Plus, it can take weeks or months to see the physical benefits of exercise (weight loss, muscle strength increases, performance improvements, etc.)

The benefits of regular exercise are amazing, but people often overlook the psychological and health benefits. These come almost immediately and are what drive most of the other long-term changes that keep people consistent.

Rapid weight loss is possible, but…

Don’t get me wrong, rapid change is possible, but exercise is only part of the equation, but not the only factor.

As I’ve said many times before, looking at your actions in EACH of the 4 Pillars of Personal Performance is the ideal solution. Each piece of the puzzle fits neatly into place to produce exceptional results in both the short and long term.
