The Power of Mindset: Shaping Our Reality Through Awareness and Action

Over the past week, several occurrences have inspired me to write today’s post.

The first is a series of conversations with one of my online coaching clients. The second is a random comment my 9-year-old son made at breakfast. They both return to the power of mindset to shape our reality and outcomes in life.

Here’s a quick mindset primer that will help you put the conversation into perspective…

The Power of Mindset is by far the most important aspect of our health, well-being, happiness, performance, and success in life. I define it as “The filter through which you see the world”.

The Power of Mindset

We all have a filter that reflects our reality and perception of the events occurring around us. This filter has been created through our thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, actions, and the outcomes we’ve created and experienced throughout our lives.

Typically people aren’t aware of how all these components fit together until it’s pointed out. Usually, people are frustrated by the negative results they are seeing in their life and have sought help from a coach, counselor, therapist, or some other professional in a particular area that the person feels can help them reach a specific goal (such as a personal trainer to help them lose weight).

Circle of Success™ or Circle of Distress™

I created a model I call the Circle of Success™ or Circle of Distress™ to help people understand the interrelationship between their thoughts, perceptions, actions, beliefs, attitudes, habits, and the outcomes that they create in all areas of their lives.

The great news is that mindset is malleable. It can be changed to suit our needs and to produce the results we want in life. Unfortunately, most people fail to see the connection between their mindset and their success.

Successfully transforming our mindset starts with awareness of our thoughts and choosing to express those thoughts through the small actions we take every moment of every day.

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, I’m even more tuned into the power of mindset than normal.

One of my online coaching clients is going through a very rough time in her life

This has dramatically impacted her “filter” and she’s seeing the world through a lens of defeat and negativity.

During every call with her, I’m reminded of the power of the words we use, and how it’s important to call ourselves on the self-defeating, negative statements that come out of our mouths. It’s also helpful to have others around us to help with that awareness when we are struggling to see it.

This brings me to the comment my son made at breakfast the other day.

During a conversation with my daughter about the various types of jobs that people choose, she asked me what I wanted to do for work when I was her age. I said that I had many different ideas about what I wanted to do, such as astronaut, firefighter, and doctor.

It was when I mentioned “doctor”, that my son said, “I’m not good at that”.

My daughter and I both stared at him for a minute and finally, I asked…” Why do you think that?”. He then said, “I just don’t think I’d be a very good doctor because I don’t know how to fix people.”

It was at this point that we continued the conversation that doctors spend many years in school after their regular schooling to learn how to do these things.

He hadn’t really thought about the details of how to become a doctor but had somehow got the notion in his head that because he didn’t know, he wouldn’t be good at it.

After talking about it, he laughed and said, “Yeah, I guess it’s like math. In kindergarten, I didn’t know math, but now in grade 5, I’m awesome at math!” 🙂

Being 9 years old, it’s not too surprising that he didn’t have the technical knowledge or skills to be a doctor, but it was a great reminder of how certain thoughts can become strongly ingrained beliefs over time when continually reinforced through the Circle of Success/Distress™.

Self-limiting Beliefs and How to Turn Them Around

These self-limiting beliefs will be less “sticky” if we can catch them early and turn them around to cultivate a Circle of Success™. I’m just happy I was there to catch this one with my son and help with the start of the transformation process. My wife and I strive to be very diligent about this with both of our kids, particularly as they transition into adolescence.

Until we are aware of the control we have over our mindset and are willing to take action, we will not be able to stack up small daily “wins” that create positive, forward progress in our mindset, actions, and outcomes in life.

What areas of life are you struggling to make positive, forward progress?

Have you looked at the words you are using? Are they positive or self-limiting? What about the beliefs you have about that area of your life? What daily actions and habits are you cultivating to create that change?

The answers to these questions are extremely important to your health, happiness, and success across all areas of your life.

If you’re ready to break free from self-limiting beliefs and create your own Circle of Success™, I invite you to take advantage of a free coaching session! Let’s work together to Ignite Your Potential™.
